Unnecesary surveilance / From a dysfunctional point of view
two fake security cameras installed on the facade of the building which hosted the House of Culture from the village Cecălaca, Romania, 2020
*permanent intervention (or to be taken down when the building will be re-activated)
During the years of 2020-2021 artist Oana Fărcaș who moved to the countryside, in the village Cecălaca from Târgu-Mureș, tried to develop some cultural programs for the rural area. One of her aims was to include also some focus on contemporary art in her program, so for two years consecutively she invited me and my colleagues from MATCA artspace to propose a contemporary art exhibition for the space which was supposed to serve as ”Căminul Cultural” (The House of Culture) for the village. We accepted each time the invitation, bringing to the space and to the community from there two group exhibitions, each of them featuring 30 emergent and established contemporary artists.
For the first year of this exchange, I wanted to produce a site-specific work, under the purpose of reflecting the actual condition of the House of Culture from there. The work I did is emphasizing a general status of many of this former cultural (yet questionably how cultural) institutions which used to be active in the romanian countryside - most of them now inactive or ruined. The building from Cecălaca does not serve its purpose any longer - not being more than a neglected generous space, reflecting the decreased interest in developing culture from the local authorities. By placing two fake security cameras on the front of the building, I emphasize on their ornamental function, and upon the buildings ornamental function for the community, which does not need surveillance, because nothing is happening any longer there. At the same time, the two red lights of the cameras may be seen during the night, and maybe intrigue the community to ask questions about the potential of the building.
At the same time, placing two cameras to survey the same spot would be totally absurd.
